There’s major disruption on the A19 northbound between Killingworth and Holystone, which NOW is fully closed due to flooding — believed to be the result of a burst water main.
The southbound side remains open, but traffic is moving slowly as vehicles pass the scene.
It’s not yet confirmed which emergency or utility services are in attendance, but crews are understood to be on their way to assess the situation.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes wherever possible. Congestion is already heavy on surrounding roads, including the A1058 Coast Road and A189, as traffic diverts.
Motorists should allow extra time for their journey and check for updates before travelling.
Further information will be issued once the scene has been made safe and the affected carriageway can be reopened.
