People receiving disability benefits like PIP or ADP are being urged to check if they qualify for a game-changing driving grant that could cover up to 40 hours of free lessons.
A nationwide programme launched by the Motability Foundation is offering free driving lessons to disabled individuals receiving certain benefits, helping them gain independence and access to more opportunities.
The Driving Lessons Grant Programme is aimed at people who receive mobility allowances such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Adult Disability Payment (ADP) in Scotland, or Disability Living Allowance (DLA), and are also on a means-tested benefit like Universal Credit or Housing Benefit.
To be eligible, applicants must:- Have a provisional driving licence and passed their theory test- Be in receipt of the enhanced or higher rate mobility component of disability benefits- Be a current or soon-to-be Motability Scheme customer (with a car delivery within 4 months)- Receive a qualifying means-tested benefitIf successful, applicants can receive funding for up to 40 hours of driving lessons with a qualified instructor.
Those who already hold a licence but are learning to drive a newly adapted vehicle may also qualify for familiarisation lessons.
However, the grant does not cover the cost of the theory or practical driving tests, which must be paid for separately.
Demand for the scheme is high, and applicants are advised to apply as early as possible.
The Motability Foundation says assessment can take up to 10 weeks.
To apply, call the Motability helpline on 0800 500 3186 or visit their official website.
Additional support may be available through charities like Family Fund and Carers Trust, which also help disabled people and carers access driving lessons.

This initiative is being welcomed as a vital step toward greater independence for people with disabilities, especially in areas where public transport may be limited.
